Fix Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed

Fix Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed
'' Default boot device missing or boot failed '' is a startup error which is commonly seen among windows users. According to the PC manufacturer, the error code might differ slightly. What this error means is that the system was unable to find a bootable media.

The usual startup procedure of loading windows screen cannot be seen here. However, unlike other boot errors this is not very serious. Generally speaking, the fixes are simple enough to be carried out by a normal user.

In this article, I will be exploring about Fixing Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. All the worthy solutions for this boot error are mentioned in this post.

Let's get started,

1. Check Boot Order

As mentioned in its message, it is obvious that that a PC cannot find a bootable media here. This can also happen if the boot sequence alters and the hard drive isn't the first device in the boot order. Under this condition, you are required to check and change boot sequence.

For changing boot order,

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. Press the relevant key to enter Setup.
  3. Navigate to the boot tab.
  4. Find the original partition and change the boot mode according to it.
  5. Press Exit and Save changes.

This should hopefully resolve the issue.

2. Check Cable Connections

In some instances the cables used for the communication between the PC and the hard drive might be in bad condition. At first you need to disconnect and reconnect the cables to identify if there is any loose connections. If that doesn't work, try replacing the cable with a new one.

3. Perform Startup Repair

Windows Startup repair or Automatic repair is a common tool known for fixing boot error. This includes default boot device is missing error too.

To perform Startup Repair,
  1. Insert the installation media
  2. Restart the PC
  3. Boot from the installation media
  4. Choose your language
  5. Select '' Troubleshoot ''
  6. Select '' Automatic Repair ''
This process will repair your operating system.

4. Replace Hard drive

If none of the above solutions work for you, then probably the hard drive the computer uses could be defective causing this error. Therefore, the only option to fix this is by replacing the hard drive. But this process will make you lose all the files stored in the hard drive.
