What is Dynamic IP Address ?
Dynamic IP address is a type of public IP address which allows changes to be made whenever necessary. Each connection of a network is automatically assigned with a dynamic IP address. For this the ISP will be using a DHCP server.
Who uses Dynamic IP Address ?
Normally large companies and corporates does not prefer to use dynamic IP address. Instead static IP address is considered. A dynamic IP address is most often preferred for the home network. The home or the office internet which you use, will be probably assigned with a dynamic IP address.
However with all the benefits no any IP address is perfect. Similar to a Static IP address, Dynamic IP too has its own drawbacks. By knowing the pros and cons, you can determine if dynamic IP address works best for you.
In this article, I will be exploring about 5 Advantages and Disadvantages of Dynamic IP Address | Drawbacks & Benefits of Dynamic IP Address. At the end of this post, you will know the pros and cons of using Dynamic IP Address.
Let's get started,
Advantages of Dynamic IP Address
1. Cost
When compared to a static IP address, a dynamic IP address is very much cost effective. Usually the cost associated with the ISP is lower since it is with automated configuration. This makes dynamic IP address an economical option.
2. Security
Since new addresses are assigned frequently in dynamic IP, there is less risk associated while using it. It is more difficult for an attacker to target your network. And also, additional security measures such as VPN can be implemented to avoid tracking.
3. Configuration
The entire configuration in dynamic IP address is taken care by the DHCP server. Whenever necessary, the DHCP server assigns IP address one after the other. The users have no role in configuration.
4. Flexibility
A dynamic IP address is more flexible when it comes to implementation. Both setting up and administering a dynamic IP address is made much easier. Moreover, a dynamic IP address can be reused more than once. If a device that is assigned with a dynamic IP address tends to disconnect, the same address can be reused by another device.
5. Number of devices
Whenever nee devices are added in a dynamic IP, each of them are assigned with a new address. In some instances, the same IP address are reused. Thus, the problem of address conflicts are prevented.
Disadvantages of Dynamic IP Address
1. Hosting
Due to the nature of dynamic IP address, most Domain Name System (DNS) has problem working with it. Even though there are dynamic DNS services to overcome this problem, they comes with added expense. So it is not a good idea to host websites or servers using dynamic IP address.
2. Reliability
A dynamic IP address is also less reliable since it experiences frequent downtimes. This could cause the connection to get disconnected. Therefore, a dynamic IP address is not recommended to be used for playing online games as well for other services like VoIP and VPN.
3. Tracking
A dynamic IP address completely lacks the feature to track real-world location. When a geo-location service is launched in dynamic IP address, it will no longer work.
4. Technical Issues
In some rare circumstances, a dynamic IP address can also experience downtime. When this happens, the ISP will have problem assigning a dynamic IP address. Eventually, the internet connection will be interrupted. Unless it is a company website, it won't be a bigger issue.
5. Remote Access
All the home networks that uses dynamic IP address cannot be accessed from outside network. Since the IP address changes frequently, it is more difficult for remote access. Especially, if you are on a work computer and need to access remotely.
Better physical security: It is difficult for snoopers to find your location accurately. VPN can also help. Dynamic IP addresses are not ideal in all situations. They do not apply to Internet-facing services, such as the Web or emai
