Modem is a kind of networking device that modulates and demodulates signals for processing information. The primary function of a modem is to allow the computer to access the internet so that it can communicate with other computers. Technically the signals are translated into a form that can reach out another network.

Usually modems are provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) itself, but you can purchase it on your own. However it should be compatible with the ISP. There are three main types of modem. Those are the DSL modems, Cable modems and Dial-up modems. Each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Modems posses high transmission rates since telephone lines are used here. Usually these rates are measured in a unit called baud. Despite offering high speeds, it can cost more too.

 

 

3. Cost

 

Modems are considerably expensive. A typical 4G modem costs more than a router. However the prices may vary depending upon the router's battery capacity. And also modems offer flexible internet plans in terms of pricing.

 

 

4. Automatic Dialing

 

Modem modems out there perform a function known as Automatic Dialing. These process can accept commands from other computers for the purpose of communication. 

 

 

5. Fax Compatibility

 

Some of the modems are completely compatible with the fax technology. Fax messages can be instantly send and receive using modems.

 

Disadvantages of Modem

 

1. Malware Attack

 

One major drawback of connecting a modem is that it can make your computer vulnerable to hackers and malwares. However for countering this most modems and routers are included with builtin firewalls. Other than firewalls, security softwares can be used for this purpose.

 

 

2. Mobility

 

While external modems lacks mobility, all the internal modems does support them. Users can use internal modems to benefit from wireless internet. However that requires lots of power and the connection can get slower.

 

 

3. Availability

 

Modems especially of DSL type has a problem in availability. Services are not available in rural and remote locations. It solely depends upon the local phone company.

 

 

4. Traffic Maintenance

 

The traffic in between LAN and the internet are interfered by a modem. Hence, it fails to maintain traffic.

 

 

5. Telephone Services

 

Modems those are of Dial-up types requires telephone lines to access the internet. Once the line is disconnected, there won't be any internet access. These types of requirement may interfere the regular telephone services of making incoming and outgoing calls.
