upgrading the graphics card is the best ever decision to improve the PC gaming experience. When we say GPU manufacturers, the 2 large companies that comes to everyones minds are the Nvidia and the AMD / ATI.
Same like the Xbox one vs the PS4 rivalry the Nvidia vs the AMD battle goes as well. Both the companies try their level best to manufacture best graphics cards in order to reach the peak of the market. Due to this fact, they make different cards according to low end, mid range and high end. In fact large amount of graphics card models are released every year. Therefore it will be quite difficult to figure out which GPU will be the best for you until you know your exact needs. If you want the details about choosing a graphics card, read my previous article on 8 Important Criteria for Choosing Graphics Card.
In this article, I will be discussing about AMD Radeon Vs Nvidia Geforce | Who is the Winner in GPU Race? At the end of this article you will know who manufactures the best GPU.
Let's get started,
1. Performance
The purpose of buying a graphics card is in order to have smooth and flawless gameplay. Therefore the main aspect of a graphics card is the performance. To dominate the GPU market, both Nvidia and the AMD strive to produce high performance graphics cards. Graphics card options varies according to factors like frame rate, resolution and many others. Therefore the performance of graphics card depends on what games you are going to play and differs from model to model.
Even though both of the cards offer similar performance, Nvidia cards has a slight improvement in frame rates comparing to AMD cards on the same level. Nvidia high end GPUs are known for outranking AMD graphics cards in terms of performance. In fact benchmarks indicates the Nvidia high end GPUs are clearly the winner for serious 4K gaming. However the price of these cards can increase too but the overall performance in Nvidia graphics cards are greater. But the AMD is known for producing better performance low end graphics cards.
Winner : Nvidia
2. Price
It is an undeniable fact that graphics cards are expensive regardless of whatever the brand you are buying. One of the important aspects of a good graphics card is delivering the maximum performance out of low cost. It can be seen in various forums that people widely regard AMD GPUs for their affordability.
While both the cards deliver similar performance, AMD slightly boosts over in terms of price. This is because whenever a new card is released, a significant price drop can be seen in AMD GPUs. Nvidia to strives to produce budgetary graphics cards. If you are a person who is in tight budget then AMD graphics cards will be the best option.
Winner : AMD
3. Technology
Graphics cards contains thousands of cores that performs operations related to pixels. For this Nvidia uses CUDA Core technology and AMD uses Stream processors respectively. Even though the technology seems different, they both have almost the same impact on gaming. But AMD is known to have more of these Stream processors comparing to Nvidia's CUDA core. More the cores, powerful the card will become. However Nvidia catches up AMD in terms of higher clock speeds.
Winner : Draw
4. Hardware
Currently Nvidia releases tuning model gpus with 12nm type architecture and AMD releases Polaris GPUs with 14nm architecture. In future AMD is planning to make 7nm type Navi RDNA architecture GPUs. AMD claims that these 7nm type Navi RDNA architecture GPUs will have over 50% of performance improvement comparing to its predecessors. If that is so that competition can get even tougher.
Winner : Draw
5. Software
Another plus point of using a Nvidia graphics card is its geforce experience software. This software will allow you to optimize games, capture screenshots and record gameplay. On the other side, AMD's radeon software is packed with automatic overclocking and streaming games. Apart from that Nvidia and the AMD has their own control panel for managing the graphics card. But comparing to Nvidia control panel AMD has a clean and better design which provides good user experience.
Winner : AMD
6. Power Consumption
Nvidia graphics cards are regarded for their efficient power management and generating less heat. AMD graphics card lacks these kind of power management. Because of the fact that they use more power even for low end cards, they generate excessive amount of heat. Ultimately this drives to more noise be produced by the graphics card.
Winner : Nvidia
